Trump Calls for Imprisonment of Windy City Leader and Illinois Governor as National Guard Arrive in Metropolis

Former President Donald J. Trump on midweek demanded the incarceration of Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, alleging them of failing to protect ICE agents.

"Chicago's Mayor belongs behind bars for endangering ICE Officers!" Trump wrote on his platform Wednesday morning. "Governor Pritzker too!"

The two leaders identify as the Democratic faction.

These remarks coincide with the deployment of National Guard personnel in the Windy City area under orders from the current government, despite strong objections from Illinois authorities such as Pritzker and Johnson.

"This marks yet another attempt where Trump has sought to have a Black man wrongfully arrested," Johnson responded on that day. "I'm not going put."

Pritzker also replied via social platforms, declaring: "I refuse to back down. Trump is now demanding arrests of democratically chosen representatives checking his power. What remains on the road toward complete autocracy?"

By Wednesday morning, National Guard troops from the Lone Star State had reached the Elwood army reserve center, an army base roughly 50 miles from Chicago, as the federal government advances with its hardline crime strategy and immigration enforcement operations.

The president has called Chicago a "crime-ridden hellhole", despite police data indicate notable reductions in most criminal activities, such as homicides.

That day, two hundred state guard members were scheduled to arrive to the region, with an additional three hundred state military forces preparing to mobilize, per reports. Officials reportedly stated the soldiers would avoid law enforcement duties but would secure federal immigration agents and government buildings.

Soldiers in combat attire with Texas national guard patches were observed at the US army reserve center in Elwood. Vehicles labeled "Emergency Disaster Services" delivered sanitation facilities and other supplies. Mobile units were set up in rows. Extra barriers was installed around the perimeter.

The Federal Aviation Administration ordered flight restrictions over the military base for security reasons until 6 December.

The administration has escalated deportation operations in Chicago in the past month, triggering demonstrations, particularly near an immigration center in Broadview.

Earlier this week, state and city filed a lawsuit targeting the federal government, attempting to halt the military dispatch, urging a federal judge to stop what they describe as "Trump's long-declared 'Battle'" on the city and state, calling it "illegal and risky".

Legal proceedings on their case is set for the next day.

Mayor Johnson also signed an directive on that day prohibiting federal immigration agents and related personnel from using municipal facilities as staging areas for deportation efforts.

Pritzker has charged the president of using troops as "staged tools" and "pawns".

During a press briefing on Tuesday, Pritzker said that Trump is attempting to "rationalize and normalize the presence of armed soldiers under his personal authority."

The historic federal law limits the army's involvement in enforcing domestic laws. However, Trump has said he would be willing to invoke the Insurrection Act, which allows a president to send active duty military in states that are failing to put down an uprising or are resisting federal law.

Since starting his second term, the president has dispatched or mentioned sending troops to at least 10 urban centers, including major metropolitan areas and West Coast locations like Oakland, San Francisco and Los Angeles, arguing that the armed forces is essential to combat crime and defend ICE officers.

Data shows that most violent crime nationwide has declined in the past few years. In the city, for example, murders were reduced nearly one-third to under three hundred through August, per police data.

A recent poll released on Wednesday found that the majority of US citizens oppose the sending of military forces without an foreign danger.
