The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

We present a test for long-term couples who enjoy scary movies: Get comfortable with your partner and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit has now made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. On the surface, it may seem like conventional body horror, but inside Together resides a intense meditation about our choices in loving our partners.

A Debut Feature Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, partners that have remained a couple for over ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, the two stars bring a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The plot commences when Tim and Millie move from the urban environment to the country for her career. A somewhat stereotypical story element, sure, but that’s largely where the tropes end. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the protagonists discover an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a strange force begins influencing the pair. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a methodically building fright fest, blending elements of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and far away from his social circle. He dreads the idea of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is intensified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie never makes either of his characters the definite antagonist.

The couple confront the sort of issues that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor does not come across as hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Conversely, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the ending sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply turn to your significant other and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can experience today.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu at present.
